From Texas A. & M. College, the county agents called in Dr. A. A. Dunlap, plant pathologist. The trouble was caused, he said, by 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) the miracle weedkiller (TIME, June 30). Further sleuthing uncovered the source: it had come from rice farms which planes had dusted with the chemical to kill broadleaved weeds. From the rice fields it had drifted, sometimes as far as 15 miles, to the cotton fields. If possible, 2,4-D should be sprayed rather than dusted. If it has to be dusted, it should be mixed with oil to prevent...

...revolver. It is purely a matter of self-defense: in the 13 years he has been in Chile, during which time he has written criticism for Santiago's La Hora and Ultima Hora, he has been set upon 14 times by irate readers who objected to his acid words. The only man ever wounded by his Smith & Wesson was Goldschmidt; he shot himself in the hand while cleaning it. Usually it has been a beefy baritone or basso who socked him, although a tenor once tried to strangle him. Last week a woman beat him to the punch...

Scientists discovered several years ago that 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) would kill broad-leaved plants while leaving grasses alone. But it is no help at all to gardeners, truck farmers and fruit growers whose broad-leaved crop plants are being choked with grass...

...Ulcers, there are two new palliatives: 1) a drug called asymatrine, developed by University of Georgia researchers, which generally stops intestinal spasms and pain; and 2) a synthetic, acid-neutralizing resin called Amberlite IR, which seems to have less disagreeable side-effects than alkalis or gels...

Medicine will be an immediate beneficiary of Woodward's discovery. The synthesis provides a model for the way the body digests and then synthesizes its proteins. Stomach juices act on proteins to reshuffle the natural amino acid chains into the solid parts of the body...
