...flip side of the coin from the act of evaluation, however, is the act of creation. Producing things of value is just as important as evaluating things that already exist. Some people learn to create monetary value (of varying degrees of reality or imaginariness—like all those recent graduates blowing hot air into the ballooning moneybags of Wall Street in the earlier part of this decade), others create social value with nonprofit work, others create artistic value through films...
...facto life sentences here, and there should be some sort of civilian review." So Graham - who believes these procedures should be applied to the prisoners both at Guantánamo and in Afghanistan - has proposed a National Security Court, similar to the panel that adjudicates FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) cases. In January 2008, a construction-company manager in the town of Tianmen in the central province of Hubei came upon a group of bureau officers. They were shutting down a small protest against a garbage dump planned for the area. When the construction boss, Wei Wenhua, began filming the clash between the chengguan and protestors, the city-management officers turned on Wei and beat him to death. On the Chinese Internet there were widespread calls for the officers to be harshly punished...
