...story deals with the troubles of Granger, a pedantic principal of the college of Beauvais at Paris. The first act opens with an interview between Granger and Chateaufort, the swash buckler of the play, who comes to ask for the hand of Manon, the pedant's daughter. Granger does not want him, wishing to marry Manon to a rich peasant named Gareau, so he tells Chateaufort that he has a rival in La Tremblaye, a gentleman living near the college of Beauvais. Chateaufort goes away breathing threats of vengeance against La Tremblaye. Granger then turns to his own love affairs...
Charlet Granger arrives and refuses to go to Venice. His father deceives his relatives by telling them that Charlot has become insane, and forces him to consent to go. Paquier delivers his master's love messages to Genevote, who agree to meet the pedant. This ends the first act...
...second act Granger declares his love to Genevote in a most pedantic manner. Genevote humors him, and they agree that Granger is to come to Genevote's house with a ladder that night and enter by the window. As soon as they have parted, Gareau, the rich suitor for Manon's hand, arrives, but his wealth proves to be in an inheritance that he is going to get. It has come down to him in the most complicated order of descent that ever existed or was imagined. Gareau was sent away discomfited...
...third act Granger is discovered trying to climb into Genevote's window by means of the ladder. He is caught in the act by La Tremblaye, who threatens to have him arrested for house breaking. Manon arrives at this juncture and attempts to get her father's pardon by promising to marry La Tremblaye. Granger will not consent at first, but finally yields on condition that he be allowed to marry Genevote. To this La Tremblaye agrees, and to celebrate the marriage Granger tells Corbineli, Charlot Granger's servant, to arrange a comedy for the celebration. Corbineli is also told...
