...most misunderstood, and very likely best, playwright currently writing in English. That is far from a widespread view. In America, Ayckbourn is still typecast, anachronistically, as a lightweight boulevard farceur (the "British Neil Simon"), or simply as a clever deviser of staging gimmicks: plays that squeeze the action in several rooms into one space, or move backward in time, or fill up the stage with water, or (in his insanely ambitious Intimate Exchanges) have no fewer than 16 dramatic permutations, depending on which alternative action the characters take in several key scenes...
...Fingers Over Georgia Zbigniew Brzezinski's article [Aug. 25] was monstrously lopsided. He fails to mention that it was the Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili who ignited the war by attacking South Ossetia in the first place. Saakashvili miscalculated that the U.S. and the rest of Europe would support his action and come to his defense. His subsequent rhetoric was aggravating, which provoked the Russians and produced natural consequences. German Chancellor Angela Merkel played second fiddle to him. Her popularity is at a very low ebb in Germany. Saakashvili should follow President Musharraf and tender his resignation before things get hotter...

Despite slipping past a stingy backline, the ball could not sneak through an outstretched Pennock as the Rams?...

But it was Vilsack who issued the most urgent call for action. “You can make history,” he said. “And shame on you if you don’t.” —Staff writer Alexandra Perloff-Giles can be reached at aperloff@fas.harvard.edu...
Despite a promising start and continued efforts throughout the contest, the women’s volleyball team fell to Boston College last night 3-1 in Chestnut Hill. In a game characterized by constant back-and-forth action, the Crimson (1-4) edged out the Eagles (5-5) in the first set before dropping the ensuing three. Despite the loss, the squad was able to take away some positives from the game. “You have to look at the points in a game,” senior Katherine McKinley said. “A win or a loss...
