I do so for the same reason I support teaching English, keyboarding and the U.S. Constitution: each is useful knowledge for informed citizens in a democracy. My only caution: teach all of the Bible. We wouldn't sample bits and pieces of Macbeth, Jane Eyre, 1984 or Catch-22 in a literature class; we would expect students to read an entire work. Just so with the Bible. Human-rights activist??Rigoberta Menchu says she plans to run for president of Guatemala this fall. If elected, she will be the country's first female head of state, as well as the first Maya to hold the office. Menchu is no stranger to accomplishment. In 1992 she won the Nobel Peace Prize for her work defending indigenous peoples. She wouldn't be the first Peace Prize winner to make the leap to politics...

...troubled by it because I am committed to the free market. But I would be much more troubled if this had been done by someone else. I don't believe in controls as an end in themselves or on a permanent basis. On the other hand, I am an activist???nobody believed that until this year.
