...Afghanistan, Kosovo, the first Gulf War - each a video game played from 15,000 ft. - only added to our delusion of control. We are not so lucky this time. This is an actual war; there are unplanned events: an unruly enemy, uncooperative allies, magisterial dust storms. That doesn't necessarily mean the war is going badly. ...that I must be prepared to assume the highest responsibility one day. I knew what he meant. He tried to ensure that event. In December 1983, two months before his death, Andropov sent a written message to the Central Committee plenum, suggesting that "Gorbachev should be entrusted with actual leadership." I did not know that he did this. And neither did the plenum. In 1988, I learned that Chernenko had simply cut off that part of the message and concealed it. And so he became General Secretary. Since the ground war started last Thursday, U.S. forces have indeed raced forward, reaching Najaf and other points in the north that are within striking distance of Baghdad. But the costs of this rapid advance are now being paid. There is mounting insecurity behind the front lines, and spreading harrassment of the long logistics column that links Kuwait with the troops 240 miles to the northwest...
