...actual life of the book seems to me not in its thesis about the withdrawal of God, but in its repulsive vision of the absence of love and grace from human relations. Unfortunately the thesis seems to crush the book's main character, to drain the life from him. Piet is, supposedly, the scapegoat of the couples. And it is the group's judgment that Piet was used by Foxy in order to discard her cold-fish husband. But to see him as a scapegoat is to accept him as will less--and so the author seems to have viewed...

...capitals of the world last week there was more talk about peace talks than actual progress toward them. And on the battlefields of South Viet Nam, there was more preparation for heavy fighting than major action. Most battle contacts were limited to skirmishes scattered throughout the countryside, but few allied military men expected the comparative lull to last. One reason was a man who figured prominently in the week's news: Colonel Pham Van Thanh, a Viet Cong since 1945, who crossed lines to become the highest ranking defector of the war. Girard first mobilized 20 youthful Sinologists who had been admitted to Peking on a cultural exchange program, then set to work. Some parts were easy. "The price list for food," says Girard, "was taken right off the stalls in the Peking markets, the section on Chinese cooking from actual menus of banquets we attended." The group questioned every tourist, businessman and teacher who came through Peking about his travels inside China, then sent the information out of China in the safety of French diplomatic packets. Forbidden to visit the grave of Confucius in Shantung, Girard contrived to overfly...

Cataclysmic Collision. To determine the actual deceleration rate of universal expansion, Allan Sandage, of the Mt. Wilson and Palomar observatories, and other astronomers have been plotting graphs of the brightness of both nearby and distant galaxies versus their red shift.* From the resulting curves, they have approximated the deceleration of the galaxies as they recede from the earth. If his data is correct, says Sandage, galaxies have been racing away from each other for 10 billion years or so, but are slowing down rapidly enough to bring them to a halt in another 30 billion years. From that time...

...minute gesture or item, such as the pencil reproduced in actual size on this page, can sometimes acquire great value. That is just what happened when a voluntary organization asked G.I.s in Viet Nam what their most-wanted items were. Those needs were modest-such things as a pair of dry socks and some writing material. TIME provided the tiny pencil, which the Christian Reform Laymen's League included in 200,000 packets to Viet Nam. Surprisingly, the minipencil is serving purposes far beyond postcard writing. Its wooden shaft, wrote one Marine, is being used to clean the hard...
