Last time out, our singing rodents followed the guidance of their perplexed owner Dave (Jason Lee) and became international rock stars. This time Dave, in traction in Paris, sends them back to Los Angeles, where their caretaker is Toby, a PlayStation addict and all-around loser played by Zachary Levi (star of TV's Chuck). His main function - except for failing in public, then being romantically rewarded for it - is to make sure the chipmunks go to ... high school? Affirmative action in California admission policies now apparently applies to 8-in.-tall brown animals...
That's how alien Michael (Quinton Aaron) appears to most of the students and faculty at Wingate Christian School. The abandoned son of a crack-addict mom (his father vanished and was murdered years later), he's the kind of kid for whom a written test looks like a scrawl in hieroglyphics, as foreign to him as a quick pass to the wideout might be to a more studious child. It asks him to strain muscles he has never been encouraged to use. His teachers dismiss him as stupid, illiterate, unteachable; his classmates shy away from him; and the ladies...
...Blind Side's success to a condition that might be called seasonal affection. With the big college teams fighting for conference championships and audiences in a beneficent holiday mood, the mass audience must have figured it was downright Thanksgiving-y to see a real-life uplifter about a crack addict's son who is adopted by a nice white couple and pulls himself up to be a star tackle at Ole Miss. (Sort of Rudy meets Precious.) It doesn't hurt that the movie's subject, Michael Oher, graduated impressively from college to the NFL. As a starting right tackle...
...Before there was Pippa Lee, there was Pippa Sarkissian, adoring daughter of a Dexedrine addict named Suky (Maria Bello), who treated Pippa as a living doll and an accessory to an imagined life. "I was the only one who knew she was pretending to be in a commercial or a movie half the time," Pippa tells us in voiceover. Eventually, teenage Pippa flees her childhood home for her Aunt Trish's (Robin Weigert, Deadwood's Calamity Jane). But that's essentially her only act of strength before beginning a new phase of being passed around by people other than...
Michael “Big Mike” Oher—the protagonist of “The Blind Side”—has a GPA of 0.6 when he first shows up at Wingate Christian High School in Tennessee. His mother is a crack addict he hasn’t seen for years and his father is nonexistent. He carries one extra shirt around with him in a plastic bag. Some nights he sleeps on a stoop, some nights in the school gym, some nights on his friend Steven’s couch...
