...This "no reasonable interpretation" standard will apply to all corporations and unions trying to figure out what ads they can pay for, and it's a lot tougher than what most people thought was the old standard: If it looks like an ad for a candidate, then it probably is. That standard grew out of the court's 2003 decision upholding McCain-Feingold's ban on candidate ads just before an election, so long as companies could still spend money on ads about issues...
...almost hear the egg sizzling in the skillet (your brain on drugs, remember?) while reading Chief Justice John Roberts' opinion undermining student speech rights. The ruling reads like nothing so much as a goofy TV ad denouncing pot, but in the end, Roberts gets it about right when he says the case of the kid suspended for unfurling a "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" banner across from school "hardly justifies sounding the First Amendment bugle...
...Earlier this month a group of nearly 50 Japanese lawmakers from both major political parties took out a full-page ad in the Washington Post asserting that there was no historical evidence to back up the "comfort women" allegations. Last week, an even larger group of legislators announced that they had determined that the death toll of the Nanjing Massacre - where Japanese soldiers slaughtered Chinese civilians over a three-week period - was just 20,000, one-tenth of the figure widely accepted among historians. Even without wading into the morass of what constitutes "historical evidence," such endeavors are plainly terrible...
