...left his home town of Halle at 18, had spent three years in Italy schooling himself in opera and oratorio. On his first visit to England, he patched Rinaldo together in a scant two weeks. Based on the poem by Torquato Tasso (1544-1595), the opera was derided by Addison in The Spectator for its "Painted dragons spitting wildfire, and enchanted chariots drawn by Flanders mares." Mack Harrell sang Jesus with great expressiveness; the most tender moment of the whole afternoon as it should have been, was his "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani...

William Addison Dwiggins, 76, top-ranking U.S. type designer, who produced the clean, legible Metro newspaper type and the Caledonia and Electra book faces, fulminated at U.S. banknote design: "It is worth its face in gold, but my God, what a face!", wrote the authoritative book, Layout in Advertising; after a stroke; in Hingham, Mass...
