Thanksgiving bids all Americans address themselves to that problem. The Rev. Peter Gomes, 38, who is preacher to Harvard University, expressed some interesting views on the holiday. Said he: "I've never really quite thought of it in terms of a shopping list, but one thing I continue to be grateful for is simply for possibilities, that things do not necessarily always have to be as they are. I'm grateful that God is not a God of the status quo. The remarkable thing about that episode in Plymouth in 1621 is that whites and Indians enjoyed themselves...
...that when we think of memorable speeches, we think of Kennedy's talk as President-elect to the Massachusetts legislature, and the challenge to the nation to be people of "courage, judgment, integrity and dedication"; his Inaugural Address; his Berlin exhortation, "Ich bin ein Berliner"! There was a resonance with our aspirations in those speeches, but there also was a heady reach for excellence of language and of thought...
...Iran's proud autocrat. It reminded some history-conscious observers of the last days of Imperial Russia's Czar Nicholas II in 1917, or France's King Louis XVI trying to stem the revolutionary fervor that was eventually to sweep him from his throne in 1792. Opposed by Thatcher's Tories, who have 281 seats, and the Liberal Party (13), Callaghan's Labor minority of 312 can now stay in power only with the help of smaller parties. Callaghan needs the votes...
While the jury was deliberating, Farber was summoned before a Bergen County judge, Theodore Trautwein, and asked one last time whether he still refused to yield his notes. "Yes, sir," said Farber. Replied the judge angrily: "You and only you, Mr. Farber, and that superior being you must address yourself and your conscience to, know whether you have withheld something from the trial court and the jury which would have been of aid in the search for truth." Then, because the trial was over except for the jury's verdict, Trautwein released Farber from jail and suspended the contempt penalties...
