Though the plot is fairly standard stuff--a dash of Moliere, add Congreve and Sheridan to taste--Wycherly's potent satire makes this play rather interesting. Even now, the crudeness with which Wycherly has Horner deflate all the talk of honor and the false morality tossed off pro forma by the other characters is a bit shocking, and in 1675 it must have been downright obscene. Through Horner, Wycherly punctures the veneer of London society and shows that the underlying motivations of all these "noble" people are sex and greed, made vulga by the artificial gentility which tries to hide...
ALTHOUGH BELUSHI walks away with the film, several strong performances add to the general insanity and make the difference between a mildly amusing comedy and a gut-wrenching howler. Donald Sutherland makes one of his infrequent appearances, putting just the right gleam of depraved obsession into his all-too-brief characterization of the dope-smoking, corduroy-clad English professor. The scene in which he and three students conspiratorially share a joint in his darkened cottage is one of the most effective in the film, thanks largely to Sutherland's knowing grins and his wolfish, slightly stoned expression. Karen Allen charms...
...puzzles me how the Federal Reserve believes higher interest rates can slow inflation. Interest rates add to costs, which, in turn, contribute to higher prices. They demoralize the securities markets and shut off the flow of capital that business needs to expand capacity and increase productivity. They do not stop the growth of credit because big corporations will pay any price to get money for working capital...
...timetable. The elections are due in another three years, and on that timetable we are in no hurry. Yet there is a foreign-policy calendar with its own dates. It is on that schedule that we should try to make our opinions heard very loud and clear and to add our own contribution to policymaking. There are times when the leadership has to represent the wishes of the people and other times when the leadership has to lead. The peace negotiations are the overriding consideration of our people, and this is guiding...
...utilization out of the line's 16 planes and take advantage of newly expanded routes. The U.S. agreed two weeks ago to extend El Al's landing rights beyond New York City to four other cities. El Al will probably start flying to Los Angeles next April and later add Chicago, Miami and Boston. In November it intends to offer a no-frills, no-meals "holiday" class round trip between New York and Tel Aviv for $499, vs. the lowest current fare of $628. In July the line's only competitor on the route, TWA, began offering reduced fares...
