...reality of Iraq today comes into focus. The "surge" - the Bush Administration???s term for the security crackdown in and around Baghdad - is based on the assumption that Iraqi security forces are competent to do basic jobs such as guarding important structures. That is meant to free Americans for high-risk tasks, such as disposing of roadside bombs. But even before Samarra, there was a growing body of evidence that Iraqis aren't ready or willing to perform their appointed tasks. What does that imply for the U.S. military operation and when it might end? Or for the development...

...Bush Administration??sounded the alarm last week against what it says is a growing threat to the U.S. economy: the value of China's currency. For 10 years, Beijing has fixed the value of the yuan at 8.28 to the dollar. The Reagan Administration???and Congress ?needs to pursue the unpleasant implications of the fact that no hold on Israeli behavior seems to be strong enough. The same examination is needed within Israel which runs the risk of ever increasing isolation if even relatively new friends, like Egypt's Sadat, must brace for a shocking surprise just three days after a public show of Israeli esteem...

...Administration???and for President Carter personally?the seizure of the embassy was a nightmare. At its very worst, it could lead to the deaths of the Americans, and endanger the 300 or so other U.S. citizens still in Iran?all of whom were advised by the State Department to leave the country as expeditiously as possible. However the crisis ends, it seems likely to enhance the impression of American helplessness...
