...strikes me that Ms. Reisman's point of view reflects outmoded natural law thought and a Rousseauist sense of the social contract. Such blatant disregard for the dialectic is unforgivable. Besides, the decorating of a Christmas tree may give expression to the work ethic which, as most Weberians admit, is elemental to the American system. Add to this the fact that Christmas trees are pretty and I think that it is very easy to dismiss Ms. Reisman's contentions. Name witheld upon request
...hard evidence that the ozone layer has been depleted in recent years, despite both high-altitude jet flight and the widespread use of aerosol sprays; indeed, at least one study suggests that the thickness of the ozone shield actually increased during the 1960s. The Concorde's designers admit that the ship is noisy on takeoff, but they believe that the effects of its noise may be at least partially alleviated by having the plane execute a banking maneuver immediately after takeoff to avoid flying over heavily settled areas...
...cult has grown up around Georgette Heyer's regency romances. Its members are secret addicts who, when pressed, will admit shamefacedly that, yes, they do read Heyer. It takes some courage: A regency romance--and Heyer holds undisputed title of queen of the genre--has neither the suspense of a good spy story or the nose-to-the-ground clue-tracking of a murder mystery, and has no social significance whatsoever. Heyer deals exclusively with the frivolous world of England's Upper Ten Thousand at the turn of the nineteenth century, and any similarity between the world of social conventions...
WHEN CRITICS dislike a work they don't want to pan publicly, they shower superlatives on its technique. Barry Lyndon, critic after critic has written, is an extraordinarily beautiful film. Unwilling to admit they saw Barry Lyndon as a failure (because they know Kubrick is smarter than they are and may have one more trick up his sleeve), they tell us how "beautiful", how "visually stunning" this clunker is. Up to a point, they are right. Barry Lyndon is an unusually beautiful film. But $11 million still buys an awful lot of beauty in almost any art form and Barry...
What went wrong, then? Why did Kennedy come forth and admit he was the driver? Darby feels that when the police found the car first it changed things. Instead of appearing to be concerned about Mary Jo's welfare, Kennedy and the party-goers would have to face intense questioning. By releasing a sketchy statement, Kennedy could buy enough time to get everyone off the island and prepare a more elaborate cover story...
