Into Fort Knox, Ky., and Fort Benning, Ga., last week poured a stream of new faces. They were crack officers, detailed in a great batch of Army orders to join the new Armored Force. In officers' conferences the new force's commander, Brigadier General Adna Romanza Chaffee, leather-faced son of the late onetime Chief of Staff, Lieut. General Adna R. Chaffee, looked around at a wide assortment of Army insignia. Some, like himself, wore on their collars the crossed sabres of the Cavalry. Present also were the rifles of the Infantry, the cannons of the Artillery...
Last week George Marshall got down to hard pan. To his office he summoned Brig.General Adna R. Chaffee, who commands the Army's only mechanized brigade; Brig. General Bruce Magruder and Lieut. Colonel Sereno E. Brett, who long have championed tanks in the infantry. Up to now, the mechanized brigade has been a stepchild of the cavalry; tanks have had a secondary place in infantry organization. Result: the U. S. Army has nothing remotely resembling Hitler's armored divisions, up to last week seemed to be moving with dreadful slowness toward getting anything like them...
Last week 1,000 preachers, putting up in Ocean Grove's colony of 200 tents, or staying in its lacklustre boarding houses and private homes, attended an annual conference on evangelism led by Bishop Adna Wright Leonard of Pittsburgh. This week the 68th annual Camp meeting is to open in the auditorium. Last year its series of daily meetings attracted 62,430 people, and Ocean Grove expects attendance to be even better this year.
