...America faced a similar dilemma before the infamous 1936 Berlin Olympics. Adolf Hitler used the Olympics to positively portray his regime to the world much like the Chinese government is doing today. Hitler intended for the Berlin Olympics to vindicate Germany as a nation of peace and tolerance. The Nazi government softened its racist campaign, removing anti-Semitic posters from tourist attractions. The American Olympic committee, reluctant to mix politics and sport, decided to send a team to the games. Europe’s democracies followed America’s lead. The games went on, and Hitler was lauded...

...beneath that cloak, things get a little murky because in presenting the facts as he does, Baker is making an argument that he doesn't explicitly state. Does he really believe--as he seems to--that aerial bombing is on a moral continuum with Nazi genocide? And that Adolf Hitler's hatred of Jews is comparable to Churchill's hatred of the Germans and Japanese? (We get Mrs. Churchill calling them "Nazi hogs" and "yellow Japanese lice" in a letter?) ...Lisinichi Forest outside the city of Lviv one day in late December, Adolf Wislowski, 77, leaned on his heavy walking stick and described for Desbois how as a child he would climb a tree and watch Nazi soldiers shoot thousands of Jews; the killings lasted for about six months. Since Wislowski's school was close to the forests, he and his classmates kept careful track of the executions, observing closely how the Nazis led the Jews to the edge of the trees, then shot them in small groups. Near the end of the war, the Nazis ordered Jewish prisoners...
