Thanks to a Supreme Court decision earlier in the year, Nativity scenes this season also adorn the public parks and buildings of some municipalities that had ceased putting them up while the issue was in dispute. But the Supreme Court's ruling, permitting the city of Pawtucket, R.I., to erect a creche, failed to settle the matter. Crèche critics, insisting that many of the displays still represent unlawful government sponsorship of church activity, are seeking to severely limit the court's ruling. As a result, the jingle bells of the season once again were interrupted...

Where once only sagebrush and tumbleweed dotted dull gray desert, a modern hotel ($94 a night), a 4,300-ft. airport runway, a two-story redwood shopping center and strings of small wooden houses now adorn the hills. A sophisticated sewage-treatment plant draws raves from visiting experts, and wildlife officials marvel at the increase in birds that breed in the long-barren acres...

...issue-of-the-week parade marches on. Abortion, drunken driving, homosexuality, drug abuse, child pornography, rape, cancer: one by one, TV movies take up a topic, adorn it with stars and promote it as another prime-time breakthrough. As drama, these TV crusades have such familiar faults-too simplistic, too preachy, too ponderously "educational"-that a good one can easily get lost in the shuffle. "That?" says Arnett, with barely concealed delight. "That's an usuk, the private part of a male walrus. Eskimos use it in their ceremonies as a fertility symbol." Ambling back to his chair, he chuckles: "Some animals are luckier than humans...

...showcase of Sandinista popularity is Barrio Riguero (pop. 11,000), an eastern slum neighborhood of Managua that was the scene of serious street fighting against Somoza. Spray-painted revolutionary slogans adorn virtually every ramshackle wall. Pigs root through street trash, and mothers bathe squealing infants in concrete laundry sinks in cramped backyards. A notable change in the landscape, however, is a tiny, spotless health post in the district. In four modest examining rooms, crisply attired nurses provide basic diagnostic and preventive care for anyone who wants it, free of charge...
