Insurrections and sabotage at sea have touched off insurrections and sabotage of a different kind ashore. Ever since Zumwalt took command of the Navy in 1970, the more conservative admirals have watched in horror as he set adrift one tradition after another. In their view, permissiveness and luxuries have no place at sea. They ridiculed his reforms as the "three B's-beer, beards and broads." Armed with the ammunition provided by the race riots and sabotage, many admirals have shown their own lack of discipline by campaigning for Zumwalt's ouster...
...episode comes when, after dragging three crewmen behind the Vance in the speedboat at 15 knots--very nearly drowning all three--Arnheiter leaves them in the Gulf of Siam to surveil a Vietnamese junk he suspects is spotting for a Chinese submarine reported to be in the area. Set adrift, the men try to raise the Vance on the radio; but Arnheiter has sailed out of range. Suddenly they spot a plane, an American plane. It drops down for a look at the junk and finds also a 16-foot speedboat with shark's teeth painted...

Kadar's exploration in Adrift of awakened sexuality and guilt is much more complicated (and demanding of his audience) than the painfully unswerving motif of complicity with evil he probes in The Shop on Main Street. Kadar has moved beyond a smoothly delineated story to create a disturbing aura of the off-balance and indefinite. The moral wrong against the Jews depicted in the older film may be more immediately dramatic, but the morally taboo of Adrift is ultimately more interesting. Kadar resolves none of the dilemmas that his movie raises; he merely suggests the universality and complexity...
