...deservedly) been the darling of cinema’s intelligentsia. This relatively no frill treatment has restored the picture to an almost resplendent shine. Press photos, original trailers, advertising campaigns and storyboards abound, but the true treat is the audio commentary. Chicago Sun-Times critic Roger Ebert surprises with adroit and shrewd insight into the film’s technical aspects while Welles biographer Peter Bogdanovich fills in historical and personal minutia. This is the Citizen Kane we’ve all been waiting...

Theodore Rex lets Morris be Morris (not "Morris"), which is to say one of the most adroit biographers around. And every visit to the footnotes shows that those cinematic details--the wind that ruffles Teddy's hair on one page, the sunset that darkens windows on another--are all accounted for in some real person's memoirs or letters or in some old newspaper account...

Natural and inspired, tracks such as his cover of Fats Domino’s “I’m Walkin’”display Connick’s smooth vocalizing backed solely by his own adroit self-accompaniment. As usual, the singer-pianist invites several guests to perform with him, and 30 is no exception; one of the album’s highlights is trumpeter Wynton Marsalis’ tasty solo and obligato on “I’ll Only Miss Her (When...

Branch has obviously benefited greatly from the adroit producing hands of Jeff Shanks, who straps Branch’s voice and guitar centre stage, underscoring with hip-hop beats, richly textured orchestrations and densely ethereal atmospherics. Shanks gives a decidedly varied spin to jangle/folk-rock, but does almost too much; throughout, you wish he’d get out of the way and just let the kid sing. It’s a testament to Branch’s musical poise that she doesn’t get lost in the over-zealous mix. That said, the pairing of rolling acoustic...

...cunning sexpot who took the world by storm, spangled herself in gold and bent powerful men to her will. In other words, we think of her as Elizabeth Taylor. "Cleopatra of Egypt: From History to Myth" would have us remember her first as the sober-minded and politically adroit monarch who confronted the growing might of Rome. Following a highly successful run at the British Museum in London, this show brings its ancient treasures and new insights to Chicago's Field Museum. In statuary of the 1st century B.C., Cleopatra is voluptuous but coldly imperial. In pornography produced...
