Given more clearly-defined roles, Eustacia Grandin, Robert Beaty, and William Morris Hunt turn in three excellent performances. Miss Grandin is captivatingly acidulous as Celimene, the coquettish object of Alceste's affections, and certainly makes the most of her own talents and adroit direction in bringing out everything the role has to offer. The good-hearted cynicism of Philinte comes across delightfully in Beatey's highly amusing performances, and Hunt handles the confident pomposity of Oronte with his usual competent vigor...

...stuff is amusing. And on the serious side, Patricia Neal as the mother and Betty Lou Keim as Bridget do very well by their roles. But even as popular play writing, A Roomful of Roses remains uncomfortably two-toned. It should be more serious or less, more adroit in its emotional scenes or more honest. Back in 1953, when the party badly needed a popular presidential candidate, Senator Recto had a major voice in the decision to reach into the Liberal Party and tap able young Ramon Magsaysay, then busy hunting down the Communist Huks as Defense Minister in the Quirino government. Ever since, Senator Recto has acted like...

...waiting too long (five minutes) for U Nu. "Tell them we'll see them some other time," politely said U Nu, and walked out. Gasped a State Department man, "If it had happened here, everyone in protocol would have been fired by now." Secretary Benson made an adroit recovery, speeding over to Blair House to apologize to U Nu, taking Mrs. Benson along. She was glad the incident happened, allowed Mrs. Benson diplomatically, "otherwise I would not have had the chance to meet the Prime Minister...
