That subject of perennial attack, the American educational system, is assailed anew in a series of articles in the current New Republic, entitled "Adult Education", with a zeal so Menckenesque that it seems almost homesick away from the more familiar pages of the Mercury. Witness this description of the sad fate of the products of the present system: "Most Americans seem to have reached mental old age at the age of thirty. They reflect in stereotypes; they converse in slogans; their thinking is reiteration, and their action consequently--violence." The remedy, say these critics, lies in continuing the educational process...
...cinema magnate, magnifies his business, as he again did last week by the purchase of 356 theatres, he enjoys the luxury of reminiscence. Tul-chva, Hungarian village, was his start; the cinema-gorged gulches at Los Angeles his end. On the way was childhood immigration to the U. S.; adult work in Manhattan cutting cloth to cloak & suit patterns for $17 a week; saving of $1,600 and purchase of a Brooklyn ''hole in the wall" for exhibition of what passed for moving pictures in 1904; investment, speculation, expansion as an exhibitor, producer, distributor of films. Last March...
...intelligent undergraduate, too, believes that he is "fundamentally sound". But without being a Dr. Straton, he is not sanguine in the opinion of one school of adult commentators, that his contemporaries, with all their frankness and freedom, are still as strongly supporting the moral conventions. They are not, even if they have no spokesman to admit it. The precocious Miss Benson has discussed the subject in Vanity Fair, but she really is too young. Without being accused of ventriloquism, Judge Ben Lindsay has drawn startling statements from young Cleveland malefactors, and wielded them for his purpose. But the educated youth...
...Hirohito. All present knew that the present session is the final one of the last diet to be elected under a law which enfranchised only 3,000,000 property owning Japanese. The new law, to become operative when a new Diet is elected this spring, enfranchises 9,600,000 adult males. Hereafter the unenfranchised will consist of women and of those men who are either paupers or receive charitable aid from the state or individuals...
...Hrdlicka of the Smithsonian institution. "The vast collection of both normal and pathological material in our Osteological, brain, and other collections is used nowhere near as much as it should be by the medical man and the surgeon. . . . [Physical anthropology shows for example] that the normal stature of an adult American male is not 5 feet 7½ inches, but anywhere between, say, 5 ft. 4 in., and 6 ft. 3 in. The normal male pulse is not invariably 71.5, but ranges between 66 and 78 per minute. The normal pelvis, head, and any other part or organ, may show...
