...questions from the audience. Green’s directorial technique is marked by its frequent use of the Southern Gothic style. “Snow Angels,” however, is unique in his corpus. Set in the northern United States, the film is a plot-driven story about adult relationships, rather than the coming-of-age narratives that characterize his other films. While Green wrote original screenplays for each of his past films, he adapted “Snow Angels” from the novel of the same name by Stewart O’Nan. When asked during...

...take an actual position, rather than just distance himself from the Rev. Wright, who is clearly a political liability. But I think he is being naive. There are just too many easy attack ads, piling up in the Republican library. (Michelle Obama: "For the first time in my adult life, I'm proud of my country." Rev. Wright: "God DAMN America.") Maybe it's a shame that you have to try to exhibit a treacly, shallow patriotism to be President. But John Kerry got hammered just for protesting the Vietnam War, a war that George W. Bush ducked. While the theme of this measure and the theme of curbing illegal immigration are related, the students affected by this ban on subsidies are unlike adult illegal immigrants who made a decision to cross the border illegally. Not only have these young people grown up in the United States, they are high-achieving and academically motivated students. Their educational futures should not be hindered by an action over which they had no control...

Bates and his Edinburgh colleagues drew their conclusions after looking at survey data of 973 pairs of adult twins. They found that, on average, a pair of identical twins shared more personality traits than a pair of non-identical twins. And when asked how happy they were, the identical twin pairs responded much more similarly than other twins, suggesting that both happiness and personality have a strong genetic component. The study, published in Psychological Science, went one step further: it suggested that personality and happiness do not merely coexist, but that in fact innate personality traits cause happiness. Twins...
