...their brief lives, the females of one species of twisted-wing insects called Xenos peckii live inside common paper wasps, feeding on their hosts' innards. Sightless and flightless, these tiny parasites exist only to be impregnated. The luckier males mature inside the wasps, emerge at adulthood and fly away, using their olfactory sense and their eyes to find and mate with a female inside another wasp...

Under our current social arrangement, college is the bridge to adulthood. The purpose of a liberal arts education is purportedly to broaden the mind and expose students to the wealth of collected human wisdom. Harvard has certainly exposed me to much of that wisdom, but only as the object of analytic inquiry. In pursuing my degree in social studies, I have read many great works of philosophy. To me all adults were kindly creatures who cared nothing for the vile pursuits of popularity and appearance and who worried only about truly important things. They read "The Economist", knew all about electronics and conversed about biology and classical history. I thought I saw in adults the self-control, compassion and intellectual commitment that I missed in my peers...
