David Lilienthal's resignation is not happy for the country. It will be difficult to find any man who can come close to equalling his insight into the problems of the AEC. But David Lilienthal can at least resign knowing that his reputation is clean and his job well done...

After four months of heated charges, hot denials and many listless sessions, the Joint Congressional Committee on Atomic Energy last week cleared the Atomic Energy Commission and Chairman David Lilienthal of "incredible mismanagement." In fact, the ten Democrats on the committee spent 45,000 words praising AEC for striking "a satisfactory balance between 'security by achievement' and 'security by concealment.' The project," added the majority, "has moved a long way from the bleak days of 1947 when our weapon stockpile position bordered upon complete inadequacy...
