Despite ability and eloquence, Democratic Atomic Energy Commissioner Thomas E. Murray's frequent personality and policy clashes with AEC Chairman Lewis Strauss made his departure from office readily predictable (TIME, May 6). Last week President Eisenhower made official his decision not to reappoint Murray, whose term expires next week. Instead, in an obvious effort to head off Democratic congressional criticism, he nominated onetime (1949-53) Truman Assistant Navy Secretary John F. "We are concerned about strontium 90," he says, "but there are many other [fallout] materials whose effects are almost totally unknown." He suggests being more careful...

The AEC has also markedly reduced the radioactive poisons released by its megaton bomb tests, and it promises to make future tests even "cleaner...
