Next month, David Kennedy assumes office as chief executive of Ireland's national airline, Aer Lingus-Irish at the age of 35. That is due partly to the line's acquisition of a big London hotel and two of Ireland's biggest tour-promotion agencies, which has increased its ability to book charter groups into package tours. Another reason is Aer Lingus' long policy of offering high standards but low-cost, no-frills service; over the years it has kept as much as 13% more of its seats occupied than any other line flying the North Atlantic. Last week Swissair asked its government to approve a fare of as little as $180 round trip for groups of ten who buy from $70 to $149 each worth of meals, lodging and sightseeing along with their tickets. Two weeks ago Irish Aer Lingus announced a $500 first-class, 14-to-28-day fare from New York to Shannon, and an unlimited-stay economy fare of $320 in the off season...
...beat that bargain. A youth-fare passenger on Sabena can fly only to and from Brussels, but on some other lines he can now mix and match. Pan Am. for example, allows a person of 25 or less to fly to one European city and return from another. Irish-Aer Lingus offers the widest choice of all -four different cities.
