Britain's aerial weakness over the Falklands is the task force's Achilles' heel. Rear Admiral Woodward is extremely limited in the number of aircraft he can send aloft for combat patrols and raids on the islands while continuing to protect his fleet. That weakness, more than any other factor, might hamper a British invasion of the islands. To help beef up the British air effort further, the government late last week dispatched long-range Nimrod reconnaissance planes to the South Atlantic. Nimrods, the British version of the AWACS, can give British ships warning of enemy aircraft...
...Vulcans, most of which are some 20 years old or more, have been refitted to carry as many as 21 conventional 1,000-lb. bombs each. Practice flights of the Vulcans for their new role took place in Scotland, and the first of the aircraft, along with their Victor aerial refueling tankers, were ferried to Ascension Island not long after the British navy began assembling its Falklands task force. Other Stage 3 possibilities include a full-scale invasion of the Falklands aimed at encircling the main Argentine forces at Port Stanley. But for that, the current British forces of some...
...improved by the invaders but could hardly be considered fully operational, even for the Skyhawks carrying lightened loads. The airbase could, moreover, be readily neutralized from the sea. But Argentine planes could still operate from the continental mainland. The air force could not be completely contained and reduced by aerial combat, or even by surface-to-air missile attack, notwithstanding British electronic superiority. The air force would have to be taken out at base, and that would mean the bombing of targets on undisputed Argentine territory, on the mainland, almost certainly with civilian casualties...
...good guy is a dog, Max's gray-eyed mutt companion, fearless and faithful. Another one literally erupts out of the earth. This is Gyro Captain (Bruce Spence), a deranged parody of the World War I aerial ace: scarecrow skinny, gaily clad, sporting a James Coburn smile with advanced caries. This would-be gallant is given to abrupt whinnies and wistful meditations on the good old days: "Remember lingerie?" The refiners are led by Pappagallo (Mike Preston), who carries the weight of his predicament with swaggering dignity, and Feral Kid (Emil Minty), an eight-year-old who growls...
Knoxville World's Fair would be a nifty thing to whip up. Local citizens were dubious, and some are now peeved. But what was not long ago a desolate downtown patch of rail sidings and weeds is now a nearly complete 77-acre complex of gleaming pavilions, an aerial tramway, a fabric-covered amphitheater and a quarter-mile-long pit that will soon be World's Fair Lake. The fair's signature structure: the Sunsphere, a steel shaft housing two restaurants, which with its gilded-globe top looks like the world's only 266-ft. microphone...
