Walsh reluctantly agreed with Califano that the whole affair was basically a "misunderstanding" about how much supervision Califano wanted the General Counsel's Office to exercise. Califano and the senators then agreed that Walsh was a fine investigator, and that welfare cheaters should be prosecuted, and that Champion was a fine choice for Undersecretary. On that note, with half the senators standing up in their rush to leave the hearing, the Finance Committee voted unanimously to confirm Champion. The full Senate is expected to approve his nomination sometime this week...

Worst of all, Mary Q.'s family knows how styrofoam those personalities are, but it clings to its dreams, writing its favorite stars letters and reading gossipy fan magazines. In the method of check-out counter journalism, a star having dinner with anyone translates into an affair, and jaded, empty personalities are promoted into "great stars." Everyone knows what the beautiful people really are, but who would have thought that beautiful people would make a serious, but inevitably shallow film about beautiful, shallow people...

Mistress, while technically the right word to describe Nelly's relationship to Pierre, implies a love more passionate and unethical than that which truly characterizes their affair. Nelly's eyes aren't quite straight, she's free but realizes that that "doesn't necessarily mean sleeping with everybody" and she believes that to love means to notice someone else's problems. She understands the side of Pierre that his wife has never seen and thus serves a need, not a passion...

...activities began with the B game, a lopsided affair in which the Crimson triumphed by a score of 12-0. Jim Skinner provided the only four-point "try" (running, kicking or bulldozing the ball past the goal line and touching it to the ground in the end zone) of the game, and Dave Albala kicked the conversion for two more. Two successful penalty kicks by Albala added six more points and closed out the scoring for the match...
