...appears that Smith may have offered several different, conflicting versions of these events. The Charlotte Observer has reported that in 1989 she told a psychiatrist that the molestation was in fact a consensual "affair" that had been going on since she was 15-one that she was happy about because she was jealous that her mother was getting all Russell's attention. The Observer also quoted unnamed sources as stating that Russell admitted to authorities that he and Smith continued to have sexual relations until as recently as six months before the murders...

Author Robert Timberg, now deputy Washington bureau chief of the Baltimore Sun, is himself an Annapolis graduate and Marine veteran of Vietnam. Covering the Reagan White House as the Iran-contra affair unfolded during the 1980s, Timberg "kept picking up echoes of Vietnam ... I remember thinking that perhaps Iran-contra was at least in part the bill for Vietnam finally coming due." Civil society in Sarajevo had all but disappeared. With most cafes closed, people could no longer engage in the city's favorite pastime, sipping Turkish coffee and arguing. Eating was a dull affair, enlivened only by combining U.N. food packages in inventive ways. (The recipe for one popular preparation, "brains": fry onions in oil, then combine sour yeast and bread crumbs.) Spring had arrived, but children had given up playing volleyball, football and their nameless street games. Many shops were closed, and those that remained open were poorly stocked...
