For instance, many newly-elected representatives in the so-called "services" camp plan to challenge the administration's plan to "randomize" housing on the grounds that this significant decision was made without even consulting those who would be affected by it--the students.
The new rules would prohibit researchers with NIH funding from holding stock in a company that would be affected by their research, said Newburgh. Federally-funded researchers would also be prevented from sharing information before publication with any company that has an interest in the results of their research.
But Newburgh said the proposed rules have not yet been formally approved and are still subject to change. "These are simply draft guidelines, and the rules will be affected very much by public comments," Newburgh said.
"Although the number of couples affected is not huge, is not insignificant either," said Tidswell, adding that he estimated that between 10 and 20 couples would take advantage of the policy change each year.
The number of people affected by the settlement is unclear. The Harvard Housing Office previously set aside 1600 apartments for married student housing, said communications director Dianne M. Dyslin. She said these spaces will now be used for both unmarried and married couples.
