...tests, experimenters first punctured the airtight fuselage of the B-29 with shells of various sizes. They found that bullet holes did not let out enough air to affect the work of the powerful cabin superchargers (of which the B-29 has two). Even a larger shell hit could be patched before all the cabin pressure was lost. But there was still the danger of a large gaping rent such as a direct ack-ack hit might cause: how would men be affected by the sudden change of pressure...

Mainstay of Bob Hoffman's interests is the York Bar Bell Co., which still turns out an average of 10,000 bar bells a year, despite restrictive priorities. Clean-jerker Ter-lazzo, for example, is office secretary, Presser Terpak is general manager, and Snatcher Ishikawa earns brawn with his bread by lifting boxes in the shipping department. ...discovered some remarkable parallels: a rise in solar activity was almost invariably followed (usually in 14 to 17 days) by a fall in earthly temperatures, and vice versa. A solar change of less than 1% sometimes caused a 10° change in temperature. Solar changes also seemed to affect the barometer according to a definite pattern. Pursuing these rhythms further, he learned that solar heat and weather alike had clearly marked cycles, ranging from eight months to 22¾ years, i.e., certain minor weather changes (after allowing for seasons and local conditions) tend to repeat themselves at eight-month intervals...
