Much of Cockrel's attention shifted to various social-justice causes, particularly the fight against police brutality. That's how she met Ken Cockrel Sr., an African-American attorney whom she eventually married. In the early 1970s, the couple supported the efforts of Detroit's first black mayor, Coleman Young, to integrate the city's police force. That led to the appointment of Detroit's first black police chief and, eventually, the suspension of a unit known for harassing young black men. Cockrel helped her husband win a city-council seat, and he was viewed as a leading potential successor...
...sexual orientation did not emerge as a campaign issue before the Nov. 3 mayoral election among four candidates. But it did prompt attacks before the runoff against Gene Locke, a former city attorney. A group of African-American pastors criticized her supposed "gay agenda," and a conservative activist distributed flyers featuring her and her partner and asking, "Is this the image Houston wants to portray?" But the attacks did not find traction; a Houston Chronicle/Zogby poll found that Parker's sexuality mattered to just 18% of likely voters...
...weekend when the top three films boasted African or African-American protagonists, two true-life sports inspirationals took the runner-up slots. The Blind Side, the story of a homeless black teenager who becomes a football star after being adopted by a white woman and her family, continued its run as the season's from-nowhere hit. Made for less than $30 million, the sturdy Sandra Bullock star vehicle took in $15.5 million, and after just 24 days has topped the $150 million mark in domestic receipts. Following a movie about football was one about rugby: Clint Eastwood's South...
Protestants are most likely to sample worship services outside their tradition - 3 in 10 say they have attended Catholic, Jewish, Muslim or other services at least occasionally in the past year. African-American Protestants lead this trend, with 42% visiting houses of worship in other traditions, including Catholic churches (19%), Jewish synagogues (8%) and Muslim mosques (5%). One-quarter of white evangelicals share that interest in other traditions. But they are also the most likely to stay close to home: more than half say they attend services only at their own church, not even visiting other churches in the same...
There seems to be particular interest among Protestants in Catholic services, a development perhaps reflected in Pope Benedict XVI's recent move to welcome dissatisfied Anglicans to worship within the Catholic tradition. Significant numbers of Protestants say they sometimes attend Catholic Mass, including 19% of African-American Protestants and 13% of white evangelicals. The curiosity doesn't run as strong in the other direction, however; only 18% of all Catholics report attending Protestant services...
