...think it incumbent upon the Executive Committee on Afro-American Studies to reconsider its errant decision. I think it incumbent upon President Bok to insist that this decision be reconsidered. I also think the new chairman of the Afro-Am Department, my old friend Professor Nathan Huggins, should request the Executive Committee to reconsider its pernicious action. Would, incidentally, the Executive Committee members who opposed Professor Genovese prefer a conservative or right-wing historian with comparable scholarly credentials? Perhaps. ...would be a waste of effort and money to make separate study departments for the dozens of U.S. ethnic groups. How could they be limited to the seven he mentions? More importantly, separate departments will help very little if the administration doesn't want to teach these subjects. The Afro-Am Department is a good example, and these new ones would get even less support. A better approach would be to emphasize these groups in existing programs...

Another problem Huggins may have to face is a shortage of faculty within the department. In addition to Guinier's retirement, Chidi Ikonne and Selwyn Cudjoe, assistant professors of Afro-Am. will be taking leaves of absence next year. Both men taught sizeable course loads this year...
