...seamlessness of the problem is especially clear with respect to the Harvard curriculum. The absence of course offerings in many areas of Afro-American culture is emphatically a matter of more than academic or pedagogical concern to black students. Indeed, it seems likely that the absence of such offerings is the single most potent source of the black students' discontent at Harvard. The lack of such courses can strike the black students as a negative judgment by Harvard University on the importance of these areas of knowledge and research, and, by inference, on the importance of the black people themselves...

...this year the blacks suffered from strong differences within their ranks. In general, younger blacks wanted to take more radical action against the University, and older ones wanted to cool it, to wait and see if the University would come around to their position on the creation of an Afro-American studies program. But despite the tensions, it was a black question and they kept it to themselves. The black community is only the most extreme example of groupism which almost everyone at Harvard experiences...

More recently, civic tempers flared over the catalogue for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's new photographic exhibit called "Harlem on My Mind" (TIME, Jan. 24). The introduction, written by a 16-year-old Negro schoolgirl, reads in part: "Behind every hurdle that the Afro-American has yet to jump stands the Jew who has already cleared it, Jewish shopkeepers are the only remaining 'survivors' in the expanding black ghettos. The lack of competition allows the already exploited black to be further exploited by Jews." Mayor Lindsay quickly denounced the catalogue as another example of racism, and the embarrassed museum...

...Harvard is to offset the immediate damage it will deal to the Southern colleges, it will have to help break the cycle that has caused the shortage of Afro-American specialists. That is exactly the goal of the committee's fourth proposal--intensive recruiting of black graduate students and granting of graduate degrees in Afro-American studies. In addition to this long-term benefit, the report says that more black graduates will help "normalize" race relations at Harvard by providing a stock of black advisors and tutors...
