Antonia Cottrell Martin, a co-founder of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society in Washington, is a fourth-generation descendant of pioneers who drove cattle to California during the Gold Rush. She advises using a variety of documents, explaining that "a South Carolina Dutch slave owner's documents can help locate black cousins in the Netherlands.
