...mothers but also on the development of the baby. In a new study published in the Feb. 5 issue of the journal Child Development, researchers found that children born to women who were depressed during pregnancy were four times as likely to be arrested for violent crimes by age 16 as children of nondepressed mothers. The study involved 120 randomly chosen women from South London, who were interviewed when they were pregnant and after they gave birth. Researchers also interviewed the participants' children when they were 4, 11 and 16 years old. Further, the authors accounted for other stresses...
Glaciers are thought to change at, well, a glacial pace. Certainly that has been true throughout the planet's history. The current ice age - known as the Pilocene-Quatenary glaciation, which began 2.6 million years ago - has witnessed some 20 cycles of glacial (freezing) and interglacial (thawing) periods, with ice sheets advancing and retreating completely on roughly 100,000-year time scales. But scientists are unsure exactly what prompts the shifts in cycles...
...reason that sea levels may have been higher 81,000 years ago than today is that the Earth was receiving stronger solar radiation at that time. That would fit into what's known as the Milankovitch theory of ice-age cycles, which posits that the Earth's orbit around the sun and the planet's axial tilt wobble periodically, increasing or decreasing the amount of solar radiation hitting the planet's surface. "The sea-level high may be considered an exception to the 100,000-year cycle, in which high summer sunlight caused the ice sheets to melt," writes...
Twelve Olympic medals. Five Olympic Games. A laundry list of American and world records. This is the resume of elite swimmer Dara G. Torres, who at the age of 41 won three silver medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics as the oldest member of the US Olympic swim team. During her visit last week to Harvard, Torres sat down with FM to talk about super-fast swimsuits, the trials and triumphs of her career, and Michael Phelps’ nickname for his older teammate...
...Well, Michael Phelps called me “Mom.” I was trying to be more of a big sister. I found myself gravitating towards the coaches and trainers, because they’re more my age. But if they had questions, I was more than happy to help them and sort of guide them. I don’t know if it was more my age or more that I had been there so many times. But it was fun. I felt like I was useful and I was able to help...
