Haddon entered the Edinburgh Academy in 1916 at the age of 12 to prepare for Edinburgh University. Sir Walter Scott was one of the founders of the Academy, and Robert Louis Stevenson studied there, as well as Sir James Clerk-Maxwell, Andrew Lang, Lord Haldane, and Lord Finlay, President of the Permanent Court of International Justice.
