Ponelle, fortunately, has had better luck with his other works. At the age of 36, he is the most sought-after set designer and director for theater and opera in Europe. Last week, at the opening of the La Scala opera season in Milan, his latest paintings hung as backdrops for his own new production of Verdi's Don Carlos.
