...this the essential paradox of the age of Obama, that we have to destroy the village in order to save it, bust the budget in hopes we'll someday balance it, play to self-interest to promote the national interest? Just as the Cash for Clunkers frenzy reached its peak, the Administration quietly released new deficit projections, which pointed to a $9 trillion gap over 10 years. In the middle of a national nervous breakdown over out-of-control spending, we took a summer break from puritanical fretting and got all excited about a federal subsidy for something we already...

...Onward through the riffling pages of the century's calendar: Hitler, World War II, the Cold War, McCarthyism, civil rights, the space age, Vietnam. Scarcely a tide flowed through history without the Kennedys somewhere on its back, gliding downwind or beating against it. And yet reality wasn't enough - first for them, then for the rest of us. Nothing wrong with that; cartoon comedy is an honorable, entertaining and often artful confection and has been since the days of Mickey Mouse, Betty Boop and the sublime Daffy Duck. But animation can go deeper, have higher stakes. You see that impulse in parts of nearly every Pixar picture: the first sections of WALL-E and Up have an ambition, a gravity that stretches the format close...
