...personality-driven nature of cable news and the viral powerhouse that is YouTube. And like so many panicked reports, this bleak prognosis on the health of American journalism grimly alludes to the 1930s as a way to really emphasize the dire straits we're in: "If estimates by Advertising Age prove accurate, total spending on advertising fell for the second consecutive year. Another decline is predicted for 2009. That would mark the first consecutive three-year decline in advertising spending since the Great Depression." And thanks to such desperate circumstances, news organizations are becoming less adversarial by joining forces...
...July, according to Interim Director Robin E. Mount. In early April, the University will assess the expected figures for next year’s budget based on the number of eligible staffers that have accepted the retirement incentive package. Eligible employees are those over 55 years of age who will have worked at the University for at least a decade by June 30. According to Mount, if a substantial number of employees accept the package, then the University-mandated budget cuts will be less drastic for offices within Harvard, such as OCS. Currently, six OCS staffers would be devoted...
When a Jewish boy turns 13, he heads to a temple for a deeply meaningful rite of passage, his bar mitzvah. When a Catholic girl reaches about the same age, she stands in front of the local bishop, who touches her forehead with holy oil as she is confirmed into a 2,000-year-old faith tradition. But missing in each of those cases - and in countless others of equal religious importance - is any role for government. There is no baptism certificate issued by the local courthouse and no federal tax benefit attached to the confessional booth, the into...
Experience vs. Youth. A study of Canadian air-traffic controllers published in this month's Journal of Experimental Psychology suggests that an aging brain is just as sharp as a young one - at least when it comes to surveying the skies. While older controllers, aged 53 to 64, were slower on simple memory or decision-making tasks not directly related to air-traffic control than their younger peers, aged 20 to 27, they did equally well on tests that directly simulated the tasks of an air traffic controller. The study's lead author theorizes that decades of experience and expertise...
...changing selves. For the first time ever, formerly sexless children are suddenly curious about members of the opposite sex, and such curiosity is confusing, disorienting, and distracting, at least for the first year or so. In a classroom setting, it goes without saying that young people of this age are preoccupied with other things besides algebra or sentence diagramming. If students spend these awkward years in single-sex rather than coeducational classrooms, the majority of those distractions are instantly eliminated. They can learn and focus in a comfortable environment in which they need not worry about the way they appear...
