Thrilling, too, is the marvelously weird Creation of the Cosmic Ocean and the Elements series, in which dreadlocked and bejeweled holy men ride atop fish and snakes. Pulsating with rhythmic semicircular waves - the Cosmic Oceans of their title - the paintings have a near-hypnotic effect. At the other end of the spectrum is Iran, where religious observance is declining in the generation that came of age under the Islamic Republic. The young there are in turn disillusioned with the state-sponsored religious identity that has failed to resolve their basic problems.
