...control he got from a couple of guys in blue uniforms, to explain what brought him to the force. It is clearly shown that Serpico is a New York street kid, but this movie asks us not only to accept that a man with that back ground could be aghast over a cop's getting free meals at a restaurant, but that he could violate the most basic code of the street: never inform. The source of Serpico's frantic, sometimes blind moral outrage is never shown...
Environmentalists are aghast at the project. Their biggest fear concerns waste shale. Almost incredibly, once the oil has been removed, what remains is pulverized rock with at least a 12% greater volume than it had before it was mined. Reason: there are spaces between the rock particles that did not exist when the rock was in the ground. What can be done with this spent shale? Colony Development Operation, a consortium of companies including Atlantic Richfield and Standard Oil of Ohio, has spent $1,000,000 on detailed environmental studies of the problem. Conclusion: the powdered shale can be dumped...
Some of the current problems have a bizarre humor. Alabama reporters are aghast at a new state law requiring all journalists covering state news to report their personal finances, list their employers and swear that they have no ties with any firm doing business with the Alabama government. The statute was enacted almost by accident; legislators included newsmen in an ethics bill originally aimed at public officials. That addition and others, it was thought, would kill the entire passage. Instead, the measure was enacted. Two Alabama papers are appealing the law, which carries a sentence of ten years in jail...
Japan's Imperial Household Agency, which keeps a little list of royal dos and don'ts, was aghast. As her parents, Crown Prince Akihito, 39, and Princess Michiko, 39, left Tokyo's Togu Palace for a ten-day official tour of Spain, their daughter, Nori, 4, planted on her mother's cheek the first public Imperial kiss. While the royal family does occasionally come out from behind its chrysanthemum curtain-Empress Nagako was recently permitted to exhibit her water-colors-such decadent occidentalism as kissing in public was unprecedented. However, it proved catching: arriving in Madrid...
...briskly and pointedly. As expected, Mitchell admitted sitting through three meetings, the first two as Attorney General, at which the bizarre and illegal political espionage plans of G. Gordon Liddy, then the Nixon re-election committee's chief counsel, were presented. Indignantly, Mitchell said he was "angered" and "aghast" at these plans. They were "a complete horror story" and "beyond the pale." Each time, he said, he clearly and flatly rejected the plans. He told Liddy to burn the charts outlining his initial schemes, which included the use of call girls, mugging squads and kidnaping...
