...join his hired caravan to the city of Ames next week. That's where diehard Republicans will gather on Aug. 14 for a day of speeches and tub-thumping and then cast a vote for one of 11 candidates. The Iowa poll, when it was invented 20 years ago, was a fund-raising gimmick by the party to tap into campaign war chests by making the front runners and the foolhardy pay for the privilege of participating. But with a front-loaded primary season and George W. Bush miles ahead of his heel nippers, the Ames straw poll has taken...

"I used to say that we'd get rid of most of the guns in 50 years," he tells me. "Now I say 25. And the reason for my optimism is that until now, we've had no grass-roots opposition...

...there is pressure on Congress to confront the issue, and it is coming from an unexpected quarter: the business community. While commercial interests joined forces to block the Kyoto treaty in the Senate two years ago, the opposition has since splintered. Even such big oil companies as BP Amoco concede that global warming demands a serious response. Just two weeks ago, a subgroup of FORTUNE 500 companies known as the Business Roundtable called on government to encourage the development of advanced technologies to "address concerns about climate change." And when he visited Washington recently, Ford Motor chairman Bill Ford said...
