...Ah, games! I play a lot of them on my computer, and my current favorite is Age of Empires: the Rise of Rome (Microsoft; $24.95). The original game is more than a year old, but the "expansion pack" that was released a few months ago is shamefully addictive. It's a strategy game: you start out in the Stone Age, and if you manage your resources correctly--building armies, collecting wood, harvesting food--you can progress all the way to ancient Roman times. Just the right amount of strategy and terrific graphics of stuff blowing...
...Ah, but not by my mom's reckoning. Frankly, she's more experienced at buying computers than I am. I'll bet, though, that I've spent 10 times as much as she has. Here's why: when Mom wants a computer, she goes to Boscov's, her trusted, local department store in Reading, Pa., and buys the cheapest box she can find. We at Dartboard urge all upstanding Harvard men and women: Do not tolerate this breach of community! Gong them out the door, back to their real rooms, where...
...Ah," we hear you saying, "but Jim Carrey is funny!" Yep. Sandler is Carrey or Jerry Lewis without the physical dexterity, Danny Kaye without the verbal grace, Steve Martin without the patrician veneer. In the longer movie view, he's Abbott without Costello. Moviemakers and critics were probably not thrilled that, in 1941, with a mediocre B movie called Buck Privates, Bud and Lou were briefly Hollywood's top stars. What can we say? People want to laugh--at anything. Sandler happens...
