...front of No. 2 Holyoke Place, Cambridge, home of the Fly. A crowd came running at the sound, packed close around the big car from which Franklin Roosevelt emerged. "Boooh!" shouted voices in the rear. "Boo! Boo!" Seldom in his life had Franklin Roosevelt been booed. He looked straight ahead as he was helped toward the door of his Club...

...Coach Tom Keane, developer of many a sterling quarter-miler, drew O'Brien aside, told him to forget sprinting, promised him instead the Olympic quarter-mile title in 1936. A narrow-shouldered runner whose slim legs give no clue to the drive they possess, O'Brien broke ahead of the pack at the start last week, stayed there, sprinted at the end to set a world record for the 600 metres: 1 min. 21 sec. Sales were $28,000,000 ahead of 1934, but the tire companies spent the best part of the 1935 selling season in one of their chronic price-cutting battles. U. S. motorists bought about 2,500,000 fewer tires in 1935 than in 1934, partly because they were catching on to the possibilities of having tires retreaded. Goodyear, having made 12? a share in 1935, was last week selling at $28, about 233 times earnings...

...sleet but a gentle dew. Far & away Author Bowen's best book, it is certainly one of the few Grade-A novels that will be published in 1936. Though critics have never yet put Elizabeth Bowen on a par with Virginia Woolf, they may yet rank her ahead...
