...return to work [Jan. 26]. Here in France there is a Stepford Wives social pressure that is unimaginable elsewhere. I have lived here since 2006 and am aware of female peer pressure to conform to images considered permissible, laudable and responsible for women. Due to my traveling as an aid worker, being non-French and divorced, all sorts of labels are thrown at me, making it impossible to do almost anything alone. How sad when women have laudable goals and yet members of their own sex want to harm them with their own parochial meanness. Good for you, Ms. Dati...

...mildly, wise spending of such aid is not a given. Pakistan has a long history of corruption, so any leverage the U.S. has over Zardari might be used to ensure that he runs a clean administration and rebuilds Pakistan's institutions. Leaders of the reformist lawyers movement that helped undermine Musharraf, for example, say Zardari hasn't yet restored the courts' independence...

Armies built for conventional warfare don't easily make the transition to counterterrorism, as U.S. commanders discovered in Iraq. Pakistan's generals have shown no enthusiasm for such a change, despite a massive infusion of U.S. military aid meant to make it happen. Much of that money has been stolen or spent to defend against an attack from India; little has reached the border with Afghanistan. Army chief Ashfaq Kayani has made some effort to take on the Taliban and other militant groups, but fitfully and with mixed results...

...Obama said he would like to see as much of 40% of the stimulus bill be comprised of tax cuts. Pelosi didn't agree, ultimately delivering legislation with just a third in tax cuts. When House Republicans objected to two provisions in the bill - one providing Medicaid family-planning aid to states, and another funding restoration of the National Mall - Obama quickly asked to have the offending items removed. Around the same time, he traveled to the Hill to reach out to and commiserate with the House GOP. (See pictures of Obama behind the scenes on Inauguration...

...reboot. The more I think about the stimulus supertanker, the more questionable it seems. Not substantively: most of the money in it is justifiable. But a case can be made that it should have been divided into discrete packages: a short-term booster with tax cuts, state aid and shovel-ready public works; then, an education bill, a health-care bill, a green- and high-tech-economy bill. In almost all these areas, there are reforms that need to be attached to the money. The additional money for Medicaid should be part of a comprehensive health- insurance plan that creates...
