Commemorating victory over radical evil demands more than theater, history or politics. Among the purposes of remembrance are pedagogy (for those who were not there) and solace (for those too much there). But the highest aim of remembrance (for us, here) is redemption. The President and the Chancellor did indeed want this V-E day to bring some good from evil. But for that to happen at Bitburg will require more than two politicians. It will require an act of grace, and that is not for politicians--or other mortals--to dispense...

So said Attorney General Edwin Meese early this month, signaling the Justice Department's intention to take a more activist and aggressive posture toward the Supreme Court and its rulings. ...That aim, at least, has become a little easier to judge, now that the dust has settled. Heaven's Gate did not help United Artists, but it did not wreck it either. It was the symbolic point on which the company finally foundered, while the film itself, for which Bach has little remaining regard, endures. It was ecstatically reviewed in London when the uncut version was released there in 1983 and actually brought a few dollars' profit into the distribution coffers.
