DETROIT: In a surprise about-face, U.S. automakers agreed to equip cars with switches necessary to turn off airbags. The auto industry had opposed the plan as unworkable, arguing that it would be nearly impossible to install switches in cars already on the road. Instead, they wanted dealers to allow mechanics to disconnect the devices, which have been linked to the deaths of 36 children and 20 adults since 1992. Fearing lawsuits if someone crashed in a car with an airbag disabled by mechanics, dealers responded with a hard push for switches, which they said would remove their liability...

...National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warned Friday that air bags can be lethal to children who aren't wearing seat belts. "This is not a false alarm," reports TIME's William McWhirter. "These airbags pack quite a wallop. Small children who aren't strapped in are very vulnerable to trauma from the impact of both the crash and the airbag. Common sense should tell parents to keep children out of the front seat, anyway." The NHTSA is investigating the car accident deaths of six children - ages four to nine - to see if their injuries were caused by inflating...

...change the look of the Taurus without changing its identity. Designer Doug Gaffka and his team, inspired by the familiar Taurus oval grille, took an elliptical route. Viewed from the side, the new Taurus has an elongated oval shape, as do its headlights, rear window, door handles, control panel, airbag pad and more. It has no chrome trim, no visible seams, a curving, dropped rear deck and a steep, sloping windshield. "We kept trying to make it sleek, sleek and sleeker," says Gaffka. "We wanted to suck the body molding right down over the mechanics as if it were carved...

...million price tag, TIME Defense correspondent Mark Thompson points out, is far short of $2 billion for just one of the CIA's KH-12 satellites. And it's just one-eighth the cost of a B-2 bomber: "$300 million?" Thompson notes. "That's barely enough for an airbag...

...addition, an exhibit called "Mandala" is showing in the well known gallery space known as "The Cave outside the carpenter Center." The installation includes the random inflation of automobile airbags. To quote the Arts First booklet, "it is though that the airbag in its deployment and in its resting state implies not only matters of technological significance but also issues of human vulnerability." To wit, we must ask, "Who thinks this?" and "Who thinks this stuff up?" and Does this count as frisky...
