Fasten Your Seat Belts Few industrial rivalries are as intense and bitter as the transatlantic, multibillion-dollar dogfight between U.S. airplanemaker Boeing and its France-based nemesis, Airbus. Besides the verbal vitriol the companies consistently exchange - Airbus CEO Noël Forgeard recently accused Boeing of conducting a "campaign of untruths" - governments on both sides of the Atlantic have occasionally pushed the boundaries of diplomacy in trying to promote their respective national champions. Skyrocketing fuel prices and cut-back purchase plans have made the battle fiercer than ever, and last week a full-scale trade donnybrook erupted. Fulfilling a campaign...

...countered with its own case, accusing Boeing of benefiting from "massive" indirect subsidies: Department of Defense and NASA contracts. A U.S. trade official insisted last week that the Bush Administration is willing to overlook the more than $3 billion in loans European governments have given Airbus in order to get the superjumbo A380, which can carry 550 passengers, off the ground by 2006. Others suggested the crash might prevent the airport from servicing the new superjumbo Airbus A380 when deliveries begin in 2006, or that it might even imperil Airbus' entire A380 project. That seems farfetched, since de Gaulle (like Frankfurt and Heathrow, which will welcome the first A380 flights by Singapore Airlines), is building the new S3 terminal largely custom-tailored to the A380's needs...

...production lines. It hasn't sold a new 747 passenger plane in two years. Industry experts point out that Boeing has ceded to the Japanese 35% of the 7E7's manufacture--an unprecedented role--and the Japanese government will subsidize some of the plane's building costs. Rival Airbus noted that contrary to usual practice, ANA had not even asked Airbus to compete. Before declaring the 7E7 a success, analysts are waiting to see if industry leaders like Emirates and Singapore Airlines order the plane. --By Sally B. Donnelly
