...California banks on it. From Feb. 12 to 21, thousands of building and design freaks from as far away as Japan and Australia will descend upon Palm Springs for Modernism Week, modernismweek.com. This 10-day celebration of mid-20th century design runs the gamut from the kitsch (a vintage Airstream trailer show, tours of Elvis' UFO-like honeymoon house) to the academic (lectures on torn-down masterpieces and architects of yesteryear) to the starstruck (movies at Frank Sinatra's former home, wine and cheese at Liz Taylor and Mike Todd's old estate). There's even a mod vintage fashion...

...people had to wait in line for 20 minutes, but I'm not going to precook burgers so that people can go home earlier," says Josh Henderson, 35, who makes dishes like the aforementioned wild salmon ($8) and a Kobe-beef burger with bacon jam ($7) at Skillet, his Airstream trailer in Seattle. Henderson opens the trailer window at 9 a.m. and often runs out of his organic, mostly locally sourced food by 1 p.m. His patrons eat it on the street, back in their offices or at a nearby park. ...After years of paying lip service to improving fuel economy, automakers finally seem intent on producing alternatives to the internal combustion engine. That was apparent at the Detroit auto show this month, where GM and Ford unveiled advanced battery-powered concept cars such as the Chevrolet Volt and Ford Airstream. Even if the Detroit automakers don't build those models - and they probably won't - they know they need to get higher-mileage vehicles on the road, be it hybrids, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, next-generation diesels or some combination of them all. If they don't, they'll lose...

...Secretary of Defense and his straphangers. The plane has a massive interior space, with small canvas seats along the sidewalls for crew and most travelers. But parked square in the middle of the plane's floor on this trip was the Pentagon's "Silver Bullet," actually an Airstream RV, which functions as Gates' in-flight office...
